It is bordered by Long Beach on the west and south, Bellflower on the north, Cerritos on the northeast, Cypress on the east, and Hawaiian Gardens on the southeast. Major thoroughfares include Lakewood (CA/SR-19), Bellflower, and Del Amo Boulevards and Carson and South Streets. The San Gabriel River Freeway (I-605) runs through the city's eastern regions.

The average household size is 2.95 and the average family size is 3.37.

In the city the population is spread out with 27.5% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 31.1% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 11.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 93.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.1 males.
