It is noted as a desert resort, approximately 110 miles east of Los Angeles. Palm Springs' resort features include some of the most famous golf courses in the country. It is one of eight adjacent cities that make up the Palm Springs area.

There are 20,516 households out of which 16.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 34.0% are married couples living together, 8.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 53.9% are non-families. 41.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.05 and the average family size is 2.88.

In the city the population is spread out with 17.0% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 26.4% from 45 to 64, and 26.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 47 years. For every 100 females there are 107.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 107.4 males.
