As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 4,936. Kensington is an unincorporated area of Contra Costa County. As such, Kensington does not have a mayor, city council, or other municipal-level officials. It does, however, have its own police and fire departments.

There are 2,192 households out of which 23.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.5% are married couples living together, 6.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.4% are non-families. 26.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.25 and the average family size is 2.69.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 17.7% under the age of 18, 3.1% from 18 to 24, 25.4% from 25 to 44, 31.7% from 45 to 64, and 22.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 47 years. For every 100 females there are 89.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.3 males.
