county seat of Chaffee County.
Salida is so named, for being the 'exit' from the Brown Canyon of the Arkansas River. In Spanish, the town's name means 'exit'.
The most prominent business in Salida is Whitewater rafting, kayaking and
outfitting, particularly on the Arkansas River.

18 living with them, 45.9% are married couples living together, 8.6% have a
female householder with no husband present, and 42.1% are non-families. 35.9%
of all households are made up of individuals and 15.4% have someone living
alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.15 and
the average family size is 2.80.
In the city the population is spread out with 21.4% under the age of 18, 6.3%
from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.6% who are 65
years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 94.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.7 males.
