The city is an important port city on the Atlantic Coast and is the county seat of Glynn County. Plans for the city's streets and squares were laid out following Georgia's founder James Oglethorpe's Savannah Plan in 1771. The city was once called The Shrimp Capital of the World, due to the many tasty wild shrimp harvested in its local waters.
