Dixon is a city located in Lee County, Illinois, USA. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total
population of 15,941. It is the county seat of Lee County. Located on the Rock River, Dixon was the
boyhood home of the 40th president of the USA, Ronald Reagan, whose family house is preserved at 816
South Hennepin Street.

density of 374.4/km˛ (970.3/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 86.33% White, 10.48% African American,
0.14% Native American, 0.82% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 1.10% from other races, and 1.09% from two or
more races. 4.30% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 5,681 households out of which 29.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.7% are
married couples living together, 11.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.6% are
non-families. 32.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.7% have someone living alone who is
65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.32 and the average family size is 2.94.
In the city the population is spread out with 20.9% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 34.6% from 25 to
44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100
females there are 110.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 112.6 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $35,720, and the median income for a family is $45,088. Males
have a median income of $32,511 versus $21,777 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,630. 10.1%
of the population and 5.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 10.7% of those under
the age of 18 and 12.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
The Rock River, public source of most drinking water, has levels of radon in it, and while we are told it is harmless
to drink, local Jefferson School shut down its drinking fountains and provided all students with bottled water.
